For two weeks at the beginning of June, the Berks Encore kitchen was buzzing with more activity than usual. A special team from Redner’s Markets was in the house to help us pack and deliver almost 7000 meals for home bound seniors. With Chef Tim Twiford, professional chef for Redner’s leading the charge, Berks Encore assembled volunteers to help with the meal packing. Tim was joined by Gary O’Brien, Redner’s VP Retail Perishables Operations, Tabi Crockett, Perishable Manager at the Redner’s Fresh Market, and Darlene Rhoads, Supervisor of Retail Perishable Operations. This team was behind the meal planning and execution of packing the meals. Berks Encore secured grant dollars from Berks County United Way, Meals on Wheels America and an anonymous donor to provide our home delivery clients with emergency meals to supplement the daily Meals on Wheels delivered to them. Each home delivery client was delivered 5 bonus meals for each of the first 2 weeks of June. The meals could be refrigerated or frozen for use on the weekend or in the event they needed an extra meal. The whole project went very smoothly and the meals were well received from the Meals on Wheels clients. Jut one more way we are making sure our vulnerable seniors have food as the pandemic continues to impact our lives.
