What Keeps John Vogel Volunteering After Decades of Giving Back?
A Lifetime of Service
At 79, John F. Vogel of Exeter Township embodies the spirit of service. Married for 58 years, he is a proud father of three and grandfather to seven. His volunteer journey began at nine on a farm in Elverson and never stopped.
John first engaged with senior services through the Senior Citizens Council, assisting with health insurance and holiday gift wrapping. His work with Berks Encore began with delivering meals, eventually leading to his role in the Medicare program. For 30 years, he has helped thousands of seniors navigate Medicare enrollment, prescription coverage, Advantage plans, and supplemental insurance. He has also guided individuals through PACE, PACENET, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits.
For John, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the gratitude he receives. “When someone says, ‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart,’ it’s humbling,” he says. “The training I’ve received allows me to give back, share knowledge, and ease people’s concerns as they make critical decisions.”
John values Berks Encore not only for its resources but for its camaraderie. “Encore provides space, training, and support, but most importantly, friendship and understanding,” he explains. He takes pride in helping individuals regain healthcare coverage, navigate nursing home transitions, and find clarity in complex situations.
Beyond Berks Encore, John has served on the Pennsylvania Council on Aging for 20 years, the Area Agency on Aging for 33 years, and the Boy Scouts of America for 40 years. A dedicated church volunteer for nearly 50 years, his lifelong commitment to service has touched countless lives.
Retired from Dunn and Bradstreet as an external auditor, John’s career ranged from farm labor and retail to public speaking. He studied at McCann School of Business, Penn State, and New York University, experiences that enriched his ability to serve others.
John’s outlook on life is simple: “No matter what happens, I choose my path.” Even after facing serious health challenges, he embraces life with gratitude. Whether on his tractor, exploring technology, or sharing knowledge, he finds joy in every moment.
Reflecting on his journey, John says, “Giving someone the best of yourself is the greatest gift. We all need help at times, and when someone lifts us up, there aren’t enough thank-yous to go around.”
Berks Encore thanks John for his decades of service and unwavering dedication to our mission.
