Why volunteer for Berks Encore?
Barbara Shares her Story of why she enjoys volunteering and giving back to her community!
Meet Barbara Kline Geisler, a dedicated volunteer with a heart for
service. At 69, Barbara lives in Shillington and is surrounded by family—
her daughter, two grandsons, one granddaughter, and her three cherished
cats, Stella, Sherman, and Sally. After a long and rewarding career, Barbara
embraced retirement with a new sense of purpose, dedicating her time to
helping others through volunteering.
Barbara retired after working full-time for 40 years at the Reading
Muhlenberg Career & Technology Center (RMCTC). She also worked
part-time at Hallmark for many years and at Giant in the deli. A graduate
of Brandywine High School, Barbara furthered her education at McCann
School of Business. But her greatest achievement, she says, is raising her
daughter as a single parent, being a devoted grandmother to her three
grandchildren, and owning her own home.
Barbara began volunteering with Berks Encore after retiring, starting
with Meals on Wheels. For six years, she helped pack meals every Friday
and deliver meals to homebound individuals once per month, and often
steps in to deliver more often as help is needed. This year, Barbara has
added volunteering in the Reading office to her busy schedule, assisting
with appointments, answering phones, and helping with any tasks that
come her way on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition to her work with
Berks Encore, Barbara also volunteers at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical
Center Gift Shop.
When asked why she volunteers, Barbara’s response is heartfelt: “I like helping people. It makes me feel good that I am helping others.” She also appreciates the warmth and camaraderie she’s found at Berks Encore. “The staff is fantastic and helpful,” she adds, reflecting on the positive relationships she’s built along the way.
Beyond volunteering, Barbara enjoys a variety of hobbies, including reading, sewing, crafts, and yard work. These activities provide her with relaxation and joy, balancing her busy schedule of giving back. Barbara’s kindness, dedication, and willingness to serve make her an invaluable part of both Berks Encore and her wider community.
Thank you, Barbara, for the positive impact you continue to make on
those around you!
