BERKS ENCORE CELEBRATES 60 YEARS BY INVITING ELECTED OFFICIALS TO JOIN THE MARCH FOR MEALS ANNUAL CELEBRATION
Reading, PA – As Berks Encore marks its 60th anniversary, the organization is joining the nationwide March for Meals celebration of Meals on Wheels by inviting elected officials to help pack and deliver Meals on Wheels. This annual initiative shines a spotlight on the vital role Meals on Wheels plays in keeping seniors healthy, independent, and connected to their communities.
Each year, March for Meals Champions Week commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed legislation amending the Older Americans Act of 1965, establishing a national nutrition program for adults 60 and older. Now in its 53rd year, Meals on Wheels programs across the country are rallying support to ensure these services continue to combat food insecurity, reduce social isolation, and promote better health and independence for seniors.
During the week of March 17–21, Meals on Wheels Berks County will host elected officials and local leaders as they take part in meal deliveries, advocate for seniors, and help raise awareness of the program’s impact. A list of participating officials and the delivery schedule will be announced prior to March 17, 2025. Meals on Wheels Berks County also invites local businesses and individuals to make a difference by adopting a delivery route and volunteering, with a special focus on the Reading area, where the need is especially high.
