What Keeps a Meals on Wheels Volunteer Going at 91?

Volunteer Spotlight: Marian Freet — A Lifetime of Giving Back

For the past 26 years, Marian Freet of Shillington has been a dedicated volunteer with Berks Encore, touching countless lives through her kindness, compassion, and unwavering service. Whether she’s helping in the kitchen to pack meals for the Meals on Wheels program or lending a hand at the church food bank, Marian’s spirit of giving is as strong today as ever.

Now 91 years young, Marian’s energy and enthusiasm for helping others remain an inspiration to all who know her. “Volunteering has kept me young,” she says with a smile. “I’ve made so many good friends through Berks Encore over the years, and the need for Meals on Wheels in Berks County is so important.”

Marian’s journey of service began long before her time with Berks Encore. She once served as a lunch aide at a local school and taught Sunday school, laying the foundation for a lifetime of community involvement. At one point, she even took charge of a food bank sponsored by Berks Encore, organizing support for neighbors in need.

A devoted mother, Marian proudly raised her three children as a stay-at-home mom for 17 years before working as a receiving clerk at Kmart for 23 years. Her family has since grown to include three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren—a legacy of love she considers her greatest achievement. “Raising my children and helping with my grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and having a good marriage—those are the things I’m most proud of,” Marian shares.

She and her late husband Ronald shared many wonderful years together. After his passing, Marian continued to live a vibrant and active life. She enjoys reading, playing cards, gardening, and traveling. An avid cruiser, she has had the good fortune to explore the Caribbean on 11 cruises and even ventured to Nova Scotia on her 12th voyage.

Marian also overcame personal challenges along the way. Born with a club foot, she underwent surgery at age 10 performed by a surgeon from Shriners Hospital—an experience that shaped her resilience and determination.

With a heart full of gratitude and a life rich in experience, Marian Freet continues to make a difference in the Berks County community. Her story is a shining example of how a life dedicated to service—no matter your age—can leave a lasting impact.
